How rebar weight is calculated

Every rebar weight table is built on the same idea: the density of steel, 7,850 kg/m³, applied to the bar’s nominal cross-section. In metric sizes that boils down to weight per meter = 0.00617 × d², where d is the diameter in millimeters — so a ø12 bar weighs 0.888 kg/m and a 6 m length just under 5.4 kg. US bar sizes (#3–#10) are numbered in eighths of an inch and carry nominal weights per ASTM A615; switch the calculator to US units to work in lb per foot.

Bars are typically sold in stock lengths — 6 or 12 m in Europe, 20, 40 or 60 ft in the US — with cut-and-bent bars ordered from the bar bending schedule. Remember that lap splices, tie wire and spacers all come on top of the theoretical weight, so the ordered tonnage is always higher than the calculated one.

Welded mesh and early estimates

For slabs on grade, walls and toppings, welded wire mesh is usually the fastest way to place reinforcement. The calculator works with a common European stock sheet of 2.35 × 5.0 m (11.75 m²) at 150 mm spacing, in ø5 (about 2.1 kg/m²), ø6 (about 3.0 kg/m²) and ø8 (about 5.3 kg/m²). Sheets are lapped by at least one mesh spacing — never less than 300 mm — so plan on 10–15% more area than the floor you are covering.

Need a quantity before the engineer has finished the design? Normal cast-in-place structures often land around 80–120 kg of reinforcement per m³ of concrete. Use that for budgets and bids — never for ordering. The final quantity always comes from the bar bending schedule in the structural documents.

Weight per meter is 0.00617 × the diameter squared (d in mm). That gives ø6 = 0.222 kg/m, ø8 = 0.395 kg/m, ø10 = 0.617 kg/m, ø12 = 0.888 kg/m, ø16 = 1.578 kg/m, ø20 = 2.466 kg/m, ø25 = 3.853 kg/m and ø32 = 6.313 kg/m.
How much does US rebar weigh per foot?
US bar sizes use nominal weights per ASTM A615: #3 = 0.376 lb/ft, #4 = 0.668 lb/ft, #5 = 1.043 lb/ft, #6 = 1.502 lb/ft, #7 = 2.044 lb/ft, #8 = 2.67 lb/ft, #9 = 3.4 lb/ft and #10 = 4.303 lb/ft. The size number is the bar diameter in eighths of an inch — a #4 bar is 4/8 = 1/2 inch thick.
Why is rebar weight calculated as 0.00617 × d²?
The factor comes from applying the density of steel, 7,850 kg/m³, to the bar’s nominal circular cross-section: π/4 × d² × 7,850, converted to kg per meter with d in millimeters, gives 0.006165, rounded to 0.00617. The ribs are included in the nominal dimension, so table weight and actual weight agree closely.
How much should welded mesh sheets overlap?
Sheets are normally lapped by at least one mesh spacing, and at least 300 mm. In practice that means ordering 10–15% more area than the surface you are reinforcing — more if the slab has many edges and openings.
How much rebar goes into a cubic meter of concrete?
A rough rule of thumb for normal cast-in-place structures is 80–120 kg of reinforcement per m³ of concrete (roughly 135–200 lb per cubic yard). Simple slabs on grade sit at the low end, while heavily loaded beams and columns can be well above it. Quantities are always sized by a structural engineer — use the rule of thumb for early estimates only.
