Above 3–4 tonnes, loose delivery by truck is almost always cheaper per tonne than bulk bags — a small truck carries roughly 10–15 tonnes. Bulk bags are handiest when the material must be placed precisely or the site is hard to reach.

From area and depth to tons

The volume is length × width × depth: a 33 × 10 ft driveway with a 4-inch base layer needs about 4 cubic yards; a 10 × 3 m driveway at 10 cm needs 3 m³. The weight follows from the loose density — around 1.26 US tons per cubic yard (1.5 tonnes/m³) for crushed stone — so the example comes to roughly 5 tons. If the layer will be compacted, add about 20% volume before converting to weight.

Suppliers price aggregate by the ton, so weight is the number you order on. For larger quantities, loose delivery by truck is almost always cheaper per ton than bagged material — a small dump truck carries roughly 10–15 tons.

The right material for the job

Crushed stone has angular particles that interlock, so a graded mix with fines packs into a hard, stable base — that is the material for load-bearing layers under driveways, paths and paved areas. Clean, single-size gravel without fines stays permeable and is used where water needs to pass: around foundations, in French drains and under slabs. Stone dust and fine gravel make the bedding layer that pavers are set on, and topsoil — much lighter at about 0.93 t/yd³ (1.1 t/m³) — is for lawns and planting, not for bearing loads.

A base layer only works if it is compacted. Run the plate compactor in lifts of 4–6 inches (10–15 cm); dump the full depth in one go and only the surface gets packed, and the driveway settles unevenly within a winter or two. Under a car driveway, 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) of compacted base plus a 1–2 inch (3–5 cm) bedding layer is a solid rule of thumb, with a geotextile underneath on soft clay ground.

How do I convert a volume of gravel to tons?
Multiply the volume by the material’s loose density. Crushed stone and gravel run about 1.26 US tons per cubic yard (1.5 tonnes/m³), stone dust about 1.35 t/yd³ (1.6 t/m³) and topsoil about 0.93 t/yd³ (1.1 t/m³). A 3-cubic-yard load of crushed stone therefore weighs close to 3.8 tons.
How much gravel do I need for a driveway?
Volume is length × width × depth. A 33 × 10 ft driveway with a 4-inch base layer needs about 110 ft³ ≈ 4 yd³, or roughly 5 US tons of crushed stone. In metric: 10 × 3 m at 10 cm is 3 m³ ≈ 4.5 tonnes. If the layer will be compacted, order about 20% extra volume on top of that.
Should I order by the ton or by volume?
Aggregate suppliers almost always price and sell by weight, so the weight is the number to order on. Work out the volume from area and depth, multiply by the loose density, and order in tons. Loose density varies a little with moisture and source — for large quantities, confirm it with your supplier.
Why add extra material for compaction?
When a base layer is compacted with a plate compactor the volume drops by roughly 20% — order exactly the finished volume and you end up with too thin a layer. Compact in lifts of 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) at a time; a thicker lift never gets fully compacted, even with a heavy plate.
What is the difference between crushed stone and clean gravel?
Crushed stone with fines packs hard because the angular particles interlock, which makes it the standard base material under driveways and paved areas. Clean gravel with the fines screened out does not pack, but water drains straight through it — that is what you want around foundations and in drainage layers.
