How to work out the number of tiles

Divide the area by the area of one tile and add a waste margin: number of tiles = area × (1 + waste) ÷ tile area, rounded up. A 130 sq ft bathroom floor with 12 × 12 in tiles (1 sq ft per tile) and 10% waste comes to 130 × 1.1 ÷ 1 = 143 tiles. The same math works in metric with m² and tile dimensions in centimeters.

The waste goes into cuts at walls, pipes and corners — and the occasional tile that cracks. Diagonal layouts and patterns make every cut unique, pushing waste toward 15%. Tiles are sold by the box, so round up to whole boxes and check that every box carries the same shade number.

Thinset and trowel notch size

Thinset consumption is set by the trowel: a 1/4 in (6 mm) notch uses roughly 2.5 kg/m² and suits tiles under 12 in, while a 3/8 in (10 mm) notch uses roughly 4 kg/m² and is used for larger formats. The calculator converts that into whole bags so you know what to order.

Large-format tiles (from 12 in / 30 cm) should be back-buttered: comb mortar onto both the substrate and the back of the tile so coverage is complete. Full coverage matters most on floors and outdoors — voids behind the tile collect water, which can freeze and pop the tile loose, and hollow spots crack under load. In wet areas, always follow your local waterproofing standards before any tile goes on the wall.

Frequently asked questions

How much waste should I allow for when tiling?
Allow 10% waste for a straight layout and 15% for diagonal layouts or patterns. Small and angled spaces with many cuts produce more waste than large open floors. Also buy an extra box from the same shade batch as a reserve for future repairs.
How much thinset mortar do I need per square meter or square foot?
It depends on the trowel notch size: a 1/4 in (6 mm) notch uses roughly 2.5 kg/m² and a 3/8 in (10 mm) notch roughly 4 kg/m² — about 0.05–0.08 lb/sq ft. Tiles under 12 in (30 cm) are normally set with the smaller notch, large-format tiles with 3/8 in or more. Thinset is sold in bags, typically 50 lb or 15 kg.
What is back-buttering and when is it required?
Back-buttering means combing thinset onto both the substrate and the back of the tile. In practice it is required for tiles 12 in (30 cm) and larger, on floors and outdoors — otherwise you risk voids behind the tile that can cause debonding and, in freezing climates, frost damage. Expect noticeably higher thinset consumption, often 4–6 kg/m².
What grout joint width should I choose?
Wall tile is normally grouted with 1/16–1/8 in (2–3 mm) joints, floor tile with 1/8–3/16 in (3–5 mm). Small mosaic often sits at the narrow end, while handmade tiles and outdoor surfaces may need 3/16 in (5 mm) or more. Rectified porcelain tiles can take narrower joints than pressed ceramic tiles.
How much grout do I need per square meter or square foot?
It depends on tile size, joint width and joint depth. Small 6 × 6 in (15 cm) tiles with a 1/8 in joint use roughly 0.4–0.5 kg/m², while large 12 × 24 in (30 × 60 cm) tiles with the same joint only use about 0.2–0.3 kg/m², because there is less joint length per unit of area.
